Dear Burglers… Don’t bother.

If the last post was the easiest post I’ve ever written…this is the shortest. Favorite Jewelry.

It should also come with a warning label of some type… because this is the car crash of posts…you have to drive by and can’t look away. I’m about to show a couple of lovely things on hideous backdrops. Just keeping it real, and now you can proceed at your own peril.

I like jewelry, don’t get me wrong. Who doesn’t like flipping through the occasional Ross-Simons catalog?

Upstairs in my closet I have a back-of-the-door jewelry organizer. I thought it would be fun to take an actual, completely spontaneous photo of what’s in it at this very moment… kinda unlike that instagram prompt where someone tags me with the request that I show the last photo I took…. (as if the last photo is of my favorite Christmas tree this year…which is this one, btw):

This is my cheap way of giving you something pretty to see in this post. Also, this morning the top two thirds of the tree did not light. They never show THAT on Instagram.

The actual last photo may or may not have been a picture to determine what the back of my hair looks like because someone swiped my hand mirror… or perhaps what my rear looks like in the new pants I bought… or the status of the cellulitis on my dad’s thigh that I have to send to his primary physician.

Sure…happy to share any of that on Instagram, Never. EVER. (And then I whine that no-one ever tags me, haha).

ANYWHO…

Here is my jewelry closet. I also have jewelry drawers, which are the top two of my dresser…anyone else guilty of similarly obvious storage? That’s where my mom keeps her stash, all in their original cardboard boxes so she has to trash her drawers when she’s looking for something specific.

Missing from this organizer are the pieces in most frequent rotation. Those get worn and then not properly returned.

I also have a jewelry “toss spot”. It’s in a drawer near the kitchen where I DUMP store earrings I’ve taken off when I am either pre-nap or when they interfere with the phone I routinely cradle between my shoulder and my ear.. Other than currently on my person, THIS is the second likely place to see my favorite stash of baubles.

HEY!!! Promises of a short post, remember!!!

Ahem, yes, sorry Koda.

Favorite pieces, item 1: Wedding and engagement rings. Thank you Mister, for the lovely set. It’s definitely top of the list, both for how pretty it is and for what it symbolizes. I don’t know what current traditions are, but it does seem unfair that you had to commit to the jewelry industry’s designated salary guideline and my family didn’t even give you a cow, pig, goat or property. Instead, you got a bad cook with good hair and a penchant for dust collecting.

Why no, I never even thought of being a hand model.

Favorite pieces item 2… because I wear it everyday…. my claddagh ring, which is tiny and I wear it on my pinky, I think it goes nicely with the cut on my hand.

Favorite #3: This little miraculous medal ring, which photographs well but is stripped of it’s original gold plating, and is a tiny but perfect reminder of my devotion to the woman for whom my parent’s named me while they were bargaining that two boys were adequate and that if they could just have a little daughter to spoil the holy hell out of, they would name her “Mary.”

Gosh, these finger photos are simply lovely.

Offer accepted on behalf of all parties.

And while I DO ABSOLUTELY think I was a brat as a child, I think I grew out of it and am grateful to the Blessed Mother for her model of devotion and her frequent intercessions on my family’s behalf. Whether on a ring, bracelet, or four-way medal necklace, I try to never be without a miraculous medal.

Next up, decorating my lovely hands is this blue topaz which is not my birthstone, it’s a favorite because it was given to me by my parents when I was pregnant with The Docious.

No, I don’t usually wear it on the inside the tip of my finger.

Are you eating? Because if you’re eating, you might want to finish. Okay, here goes: I wear this ring on my right pinky, which was hideously malformed in a dog walking incident I neglected to blog about. The dog’s leash was precariously wrapped around my pinky and we were enjoying a delightful spring day when a butterfly danced in the air before us. It caught the attention of the dog, who promptly decided to see if he could eat it and without warning took off to the right, nearly taking my pinky along for the ride. It crunched, and I felt nauseous. I had it x-rayed and it was somehow diagnosed as NOT broken. However it is now grotesque and I occasionally decorate it with the blue topaz ring because it’s the only thing I can get over the gargantuan knuckle. Whenever I see it, it makes me think of Frankenstein in a tiara.

And now I will share that with you, my goodest and truest friends:

🤢

As far as necklaces, this is the go-to:

A little tip: One should always display one’s fine jewelry on one’s best paper towel

But when I haven’t misplaced it, this is the favorite…

…an Irish-themed “mother’s necklace” with birthstones for each of my kiddos. I’ve worn it forever and never tire of it.

Lastly, earrings. Some form of hoops, usually gold tone. Lately, it’s these diamond-shaped hoops because I can’t remember which drawer I stashed my $35 favorite hoops.

They’ll turn up….eventually….but they’re just hoops, you get the idea.

  1. Is a “miraculous medal” a thing? Or is that just what you call it?? I’ve never heard of that.
How tidy your jewelry closet is! Me and my ziplock baggies of knotted-up necklaces are envious.
    Ooh. Ouch, Your finger.
PS: I NEVER would have known that was a paper towel.
Last picture in my camera roll? A screen-shotted video of my imaginary boyfriend after one week of Korean classes. I have like a 90:10 ratio right now of screen shots to actual photos. It’s a little sad.
    Til next time…

  2. Oh my, I’m so sorry about your finger. Just reminds you that you have lived and your dog is wonderful.

Koda excuses you but he may still be reading.

I LOVE your jewelry closet. My problem would finding a place to put that! LOVE your pretty rings too. Your wedding rings are gorgeous. The same style I had. Actually there’s not much jewelry that I don’t like.

  3. I’m in shock that you have my same basic jewelry cabinet but it looks so empty. I need to send you half of my stuff. Seriously, the accessories are so lonely in yours, haha!!
As for your finger, it’s got character. Like the cleft scar on my face. No reason to be ashamed, and I’m super glad you still wear the ring on it.
Rings (besides my wedding ring) are the one thing I forget to wear the most. I’m sure it has to do with never wearing them while working. It’s hard enough to get your hands in gloves 20 times a day, why would I put on rings to make it even harder?

  4. My jewelry-in-a-series-of-shoe-boxes storage solution seems even more awkward seeing that you and Jodie have an actual piece of furniture for yours. (I’m still working toward the “adult furniture” stage of life…) I like that blue topaz! It has a bit of an Eye of Sauron feel, if Sauron were a Really Good Guy and every time you looked into the ring, you felt like you were petting a mini rex rabbit.
